The treatment process removes minerals from water, the term demineralization is typically reserved specifically for ion exchange processes used for the near total removal of ionic mineral contaminants. DM (demineralized) water plants are systems used to carry out industrial water treatment as it removes dissolved solids or minerals from process streams and feeds water.

The main purpose for which a DM plant is used is to prevent metal oxidation and scale formation.
