Demineralization (DM) water treatment Plant is a type of water purification unit. The treatment process removes minerals from water, the term demineralization is typically reserved specifically for ion exchange processes used for the near total removal of ionic mineral contaminants. DM (demineralized) water plants are systems used to carry out industrial water treatment as it removes dissolved solids or minerals from process streams and feeds water.
The main purpose for which a DM plant is used is to prevent metal oxidation and scale formation. Demineralization is a physical process that uses specially-manufactured ion exchange resins, which provide an ion exchange site for the replacement of the mineral salts in water with water forming H+ and OH- ions.
It is the process of removing mineral salts from water using the ion exchange process Majority of water impurities are dissolved salts; hence demineralization produces high-purity water that is generally similar to distilled water.
